What Are Skin Substitutes?

These are medical dressings that mimic real skin and help wounds heal by protecting the area, supporting tissue growth, and reducing moisture loss.

Types of Skin Substitutes

  • Biological: Made from human or animal skin (e.g., Dermagraft, Apligraf).

  • Synthetic: Engineered materials that provide similar protection and healing properties.

  • Composite: A combination of biological and synthetic elements.

When They’re Used

  • To speed up healing and avoid complications.

Benefits

  • Stimulates new skin growth and blood vessels.

  • Reduces infection risk and dressing changes.

  • Helps close wounds faster than traditional care.
