What Is NPWT?

Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy (also called vacuum-assisted closure or VAC) uses suction to remove fluids, reduce swelling, and help wounds close faster.

How It Works

A foam dressing is placed over the wound, sealed with a bandage, and connected to a small vacuum pump that gently draws out fluids and pulls wound edges together.

Benefits

  • Speeds up healing

  • Reduces swelling and fluid buildup

  • Improves blood flow

  • Requires fewer dressing changes

  • Can often be used at home

When It's Used

  • For large, deep, or infected wounds

  • Diabetic foot ulcers

  • Pressure ulcers

  • Post-surgical wounds

  • Skin grafts

Risks & Considerations

  • May cause irritation or bleeding if not applied properly

  • Not suitable for wounds with exposed organs, active infections in bone, or blood disorders

  • Should be managed by trained healthcare providers
