What They Are & Why They Matter

Diabetic foot ulcers are open sores that occur due to nerve damage and poor circulation in people with diabetes. These ulcers can become serious if not treated early, potentially leading to infections, gangrene, and even amputation.

Key Steps in Care

  • Daily foot inspection: Use a mirror to check the bottoms of your feet and between your toes for cuts, redness, or swelling.

  • Hygiene & moisture control: Gently wash feet with lukewarm water, dry thoroughly, and moisturize—avoid lotion between the toes.

  • Off-loading pressure: Use diabetic shoes, walking boots, or total contact casts to take pressure off the wound.

  • Wound care & infection control: Clean wounds with saline, apply proper dressings, and take antibiotics if prescribed.

  • Blood sugar control: Keep glucose levels stable. Avoid smoking and wear protective footwear at all times.

Boosting Confidence

  • Track foot health with a daily log.

  • Keep tools ready: mirror, clean socks, diabetic-friendly footwear.

  • Get care early: Join a multidisciplinary care team to improve outcomes.
